Our Boards of Directors
Heartland Mental Health is a partnership of two nonprofit organizations — the Capitol Hill Action and Recreation Group, Inc. (CHARG) and HEART of Boardwalk, Inc. — working to transform lives by providing supportive member-centered, culturally responsive mental health, wellness, and recovery services. Each partner has its own board of directors that serve as equal partners in approving policy decisions and share responsibility for the organization. In 1989, when our organization was formed, we were recognized as innovative and a leader in this unique model. We are committed to creating an organization culture where people from all backgrounds know their voice matters and differences are welcomed.
The Boards
The Member Board (aka CHARG Board) represents individuals with lived experience who utilize mental health services. They’re elected by fellow peer members, meet weekly, and oversee the operating policies of CHARG Resource Center’s programs, especially its member-run drop-in center and public education efforts. Its name signifies Capitol Hill Action & Recreation Group.
The HEART Board consists of community members who believe in supporting individuals with lived experience managing mental health conditions to have a direct role in governing the services on which they depend. Its name signifies Healing, Empowerment and Advocacy for a Richer Tomorrow.
